The Spokesperson of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been arrested at the Accra International Airport by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) with the help of immigration officials.
According to NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, Dennis Miracles Aboagye has neither been charged or told the reason for the arrest.
“Since then they have denied his lawyers access and his whereabouts is not disclosed with no charges preferred,” Justin Frimpong Kodua wrote on Facebook a few moments after the arrest.
“Let us be clear about what this is. It is not law enforcement. It is intimidation.”
There were concerns recently about the arrest of political opponents by the current government in the name of investigations.
The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) expressed concerns about the selective arrests under the John Dramani Mahama government.
The NPP General Secretary claims there are underhand influence behind this latest arrest.
He, therefore, demanded “that this government end the pattern of politically motivated invitations, arrests and detentions targeted at members of the New Patriotic Party”.
“We say to EOCO and to those directing it: institutions of state are not private weapons. Ghanaians are watching, and Ghana’s institutions will outlive this government.”
He charged members of the NPP to “stay calm, stay lawful, stay united”.
“Intimidation has never silenced this party, and it will not begin today.”
