Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Tuesday held high-level talks with the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy, Rolf Olson, as both countries moved to deepen their longstanding bilateral cooperation.

The meeting, which took place on 13 January 2025, offered an opportunity for both sides to review progress made over the past year and to exchange views on key bilateral and regional issues of shared concern. Discussions centred on sustaining and strengthening cooperation across strategic sectors while reinforcing diplomatic engagement.

Mr Ablakwa highlighted the enduring nature of relations between Ghana and the United States, describing the partnership as one built on shared values and mutual respect. He pointed to notable achievements in areas such as trade, health cooperation and people-to-people relations, which he said continue to deliver mutual benefits.

The Foreign Affairs Minister underscored the importance of continued collaboration with the United States in promoting peace and stability, particularly within the West African sub-region. He noted that strong bilateral ties remain essential to addressing emerging security and development challenges.

Mr Ablakwa also raised issues relating to consular cooperation, visa processing and broader immigration matters. He stressed the need for sustained dialogue and improved coordination between both governments to address concerns affecting citizens of Ghana and the United States.

Mr Olson, in response, reaffirmed the commitment of the United States Government to deepening its partnership with Ghana. He acknowledged the steady progress made in bilateral cooperation over the years and provided updates on ongoing discussions in key areas of collaboration.

The Chargé d’Affaires further highlighted efforts underway to enhance cooperation and reiterated Washington’s readiness to work closely with Accra on matters of mutual interest. He noted Ghana’s important role as a regional partner and commended its contributions to peace and democratic governance.

Both sides welcomed the positive trajectory of Ghana–United States relations and expressed optimism about future engagements. They agreed to sustain collaboration and regular dialogue to advance shared interests and address common challenges.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to building on existing achievements while strengthening cooperation in trade, health, security and people-to-people exchanges, as Ghana and the United States continue to pursue a robust and forward-looking partnership.
