Former A/R Minister contests NPP claims over Kejetia project

A former Ashanti Region Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong, has described as a total fallacy a claim by the regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that the Kejetia project is their initiative.

According to the former mayor of Kumasi, the project from scratch started under the late Mills-Mahama administration, adding that contractors of the Kejetia project were brought by him from Brazil during his tenure as Kumasi mayor.

Dr. Sarpong’s response was in reaction to Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s claim on a Kumasi-based radio station that the NDC cannot be credited for the project.

The former minister stated categorically that the project, which through him became reality, even included that of the Central Market Phase ll, which the NPP is currently laying claim to.

Mr Antwi Boasiako, alos known as Chairman Wontumi, in an interview on Nhyira FM challenged the opposition NDC to prove beyond doubt that the Kejetia project was their initiative.

But Dr. Samuel Sarpong, under whose administration the Kejetia project started, said the NPP has no legal right to add its voice to the Kejetia project since it does not know its origin.

It would be recalled in August 2016 during the official sod cutting of the Kejetia Phase I that the Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana, Irene Viva, whose country gave Ghana the loan for the project, expressed delight about the partnership that currently exists between Ghana and her home country.

She disclosed that Ghana is Brazil’s main partner in West Africa, commending former Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong, for his invaluable efforts in helping to make the Kejetia project a reality.

The multi-million dollar Kejetia project is expected to make Kumasi a modern city, boost economic growth and improve the living conditions of the residents.

Meanwhile, sod was cut on Thursday, May 2 by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll to commence the second phase of the project.
