French customs officers on Thursday, September 10 seized nearly 3.9 metric tons of cocaine with an estimated street value of €225 million ($261.45 million) at the northern port of Dunkirk, Reuters is reporting.
The matter was confirmed by the French organized crime prosecutor’s office.
The cocaine was concealed inside a container of plastic waste arriving from Ghana with the shipment initially destined in part for Antwerp.
The cocaine has since been destroyed and the French prosecutor has opened an investigation, news reports said.
France’s judicial police targeted the criminal network alleged to be behind the shipment before the seizure.
Assin South Member of Parliament Reverend John Ntim Fordjour has expressed worry about the latest drug bust, insisting someone in government should be held responsible.
“In less than 2 years under the NDC Mahama government, over $1billion unprecedented worth of drugs have been busted in and out of our ports and yet no government official has been fired for their failure,” he noted.
“Is the government directly facilitating these narcotics transits or benefiting from the trade, for which they have failed to take steps to disincentivize drug trafficking?”
