Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has stated that a world class facility has been made available in Ghana in anticipation of hosting the Africa Free Trade Secretariat.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah disclosed this on Monday, May 13 when he received a 10-member delegation from the African Union in Ghana to ascertain the country’s preparedness to host the Secretariat.
“We have residential facilities for the Director General and staff in a number of optional places in Accra that we will be taking them to.
“We have world class office accommodation in the Central Business District which we will be taking them too. We have auxiliary facilities that we will be showcasing to them.”
Ghana is competing with six other African countries for the bid to host the Free Trade Secretariat.
It is on the back of this that a delegation led by the AU Advisor to the Bureau of Regional Integration, Rosette Nyirin Kindi Katungye, is in the country to inspect facilities available to host the Secretariat.
The Information Minister said Ghana stands the chance of benefitting tremendously if selected to win the bid.
He also hinted that some 100 jobs will be created if Ghana wins the bid.
On March 21, 2018, Ghana joined 43 other African countries to sign a framework to establish the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA).
The ACFTA is an agreement advanced by the African Union (AU) that seeks to create the largest free trade area in the world and remains one of the flagship projects of the AU Agenda 2063.
If implemented, the African Continental Free Trade is believed to increase intra-African trade significantly and promote structural transformation, and Ghana is seeking to be the country to house the Free Trade Secretariat.
