Actress, Gloria Sarfo has won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the 2020 edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) Saturday night.
Gloria won the award for her role in ‘Perfect Picture: 10 Years Later’. Her nomination, and subsequent the win, was Ghana’s only nomination at the Awards this year which is the seventh edition.
The AMVCA, which is an annual accolade presented by Multichoice and recognises outstanding achievement in television and film, came off at the Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos Nigeria.
Gloria Sarfo beat competition from Toni Tones in ‘King of Boys’, Eucharia Anunobi in ‘The Foreigner’s God’, Tina Mba in ‘The Set Up’ and Mary Lazarus in ‘Size 12’ to win the award.
The Ghanaian actress was not at the event to receive the award. Nigerian actresses Beverly Naya, who also starred in ‘Perfect Picture: 10 Years Later’ and Bimbo Ademoye received the award on her behalf.
Shortly after her nomination in February, the ‘Efiewura’ actress in an exclusive phone-in interview on Showbuzz on 3FM with MzGee said she is overly elated and was also hopeful of winning.
“I’m very optimistic about this. My sister told me, ‘Ama this is for you because it looks like you are the only Ghanaian in there and they can never give all the awards to the Nigerians and other countries and not give at least one to Ghana, so we are bringing this home’ and I believe God has a reason for this so I’m very optimistic about it.”
She noted that “this is a movie that I played four scenes….Two scenes were the only scenes that I had lines, the other two were just montages, so Gloria I have been asking myself since last night, what did they see? It’s amazing.”
