Government has announced activities to commemorate the death of eight persons including two ministers of state in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
“As a nation, we must pause to remember, honour, and pay tribute to the selflessness, service, and sacrifice of the ‘Departed 8’,” said a statement issued by the Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who is also the Minister of Government Communications.
A series of solemn activities has been planned by government in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, key stakeholders, and alumni groups.
On Thursday, July 30, there was an official presentation of the state’s support to the bereaved families.
The core activities will begin on Tuesday, August 4 with a memorial lecture in honour of Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence before the sad incident.
It will be held by the Ministry of Defence and the old students of Pope John’s Boys SHS at the Burma Hall in Burma Camp.
Thursday, August 6 will witness a national inter-faith memorial church service at the UPSA Auditorium in Madina.
“In attendance will be the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, H.E. John Dramani Mahama and the Vice President and Chair of the Armed Forces Council, H.E. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang,” the statement on Thursday indicated.
“The general public is accordingly invited.”
Later that day, there will be an official unveiling of a cenotaph by the Ministry of Defence.
On Saturday, August 7, there will be nationwide blood donation drive.
“This is an appropriate and life-saving way to pay tribute to our fallen heroes,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu stressed.
The victims of the crash were Dr Omane Boamah, then Minister of Environment Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, then Ag. Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, then NDC Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, then Deputy NADMO Coordinator Samuel Aboagye, and Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) officers Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu and Engineer Sgt. Ernest Addo Mensah.
