An Accra High Court has granted the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) an arrest warrant for the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South Constituency, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah.
The warrant was granted on Wednesday, September 30 following an application by lawyers of the state investigative body.
There was confrontation between officers of EOCO and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP on Wednesday, September 23 when an attempt was made to arrest the latter.
This led to condemnation from several quarters as regards the modus operandi of EOCO for the subject of investigation.
The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) had added its voice to the attempt to arrest Mr Baffour Awuah right from court.
“Lawyers play a critical role in the administration of justice and the protection of the rights of citizens. Any action that appears to interfere with their ability to discharge their professional duties risks undermining public confidence in the justice system and the rule of law,” GBA had said.
On Wednesday, lawyers of EOCO had told the High Court they have exhausted all reasonable means of securing the MP’s voluntary attendance.
Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai also confirmed that the Manhyia South MP’s “imminent” arrest has to do with a complaint on a supposed unauthorised financial transaction at SIC Life Savigns & Loans Company Limited.
