Kofi Abotsi heads UPSA Law Faculty

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has appointed renowned legal practitioner and Executive Secretary to the Emile Short Commission of Inquiry, Ernest Kofi Abotsi, as the new Dean of its Law Faculty.

An announcement on the UPSA website on Wednesday, May 20 broke the news of his appointment.

“The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) is delighted to announce the appointment of Ernest Kofi Abotsi as Dean of its Faculty of Law. Dean Abotsi joins the University at an important time in its history, and during a period when the institution seeks to leverage on its innovation and creativity to maintain a leadership niche in training and education,” the publication reads in parts.

The University is confident that the distinguished record in management at the highest level of legal academia, Dean Abotsi brings to the table a wealth of value and insights that will contribute to attainment of the Faculty’s mission.

“Having served as Dean of the GIMPA Law School between 2014-2018, Dean Abotsi is an accomplished academic with an intimate understanding of running a law school in a globalized setting anchored on delivering the ultimate student experience and faculty development,” the University noted.

Dean Kofi Abotsi comes to succeed Professor Kwame Frimpong, whose tenure of office expired this year.

About Ernest Kofi Abotsi

Dean Kofi Abotsi is the immediate past Dean of the GIMPA Law School, a position he held between 2012 and 2018. He is a practicing lawyer, a public intellectual and the managing partner of Axis Legal Solicitors, a firm of consulting barristers and solicitors which specializes in corporate and commercial advisory and litigation.

With over 17 years standing at the Ghanaian Bar, Dean Abotsi has also held various public service positions, including serving on Constitutional Commissions and consulting for governmental and inter-governmental agencies and bodies. He has extensive experience in active professional law practice and has advised a broad range of clientele including corporations and sovereigns.

In addition to the above, Dean Abotsi has served on a number of boards and advisory councils and played pivotal roles in shaping the policy direction of corporate entities in Ghana, including presently being the chairman of the advisory board of the Chief Executives Officers (CEO) Network of Ghana, (a body comprising the CEOs of some of the largest and notable corporations in Ghana).

Dean Abotsi holds a bachelor of Laws Degree and Barrister-at-Law Certificate from the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law respectively, as well as a Master of Laws Degree from the Harvard Law School in the United States.

He is equally widely consulted in academia and has been a visiting scholar and guest lecturer in leading European and American universities including Oxford University in the United Kingdom, Fordham Law School and Indiana Law School, in the United States, and the University of Milan Biccoca, in Italy.

Dean Abotsi has written extensively in leading peer review journals of law in the world in various areas of the law but largely concentrated in constitutional and corporate law.

He is a member of charitable organizations and professional bodies including the Ghana Bar Association and rotary international a fellow of the Institute of directors, Ghana.
