File photo[/caption] A man who attempted to traffic his own child to be married off in Nigeria has been arrested by the police from Donkorkrom in the Afram Plains North District, Eastern Region The man whose name has been given as Abubakar Iddrisu was about crossing the Volta lake with his 14-year daughter when he was apprehended. He is currently behind bars for allegedly trying to force a minor into marriage. According to the police, on May 2, 2019, at about 10am, personnel at Adeambra-Donkorkrom intercepted Abubakar Iddrisu with the 14-year-old girl. The teenager was crying behind the father on a motorcycle that was heading towards the pontoon landing stage at Agordeke to cross the voltage lake to Kpando. The demeanour of the girl attracted the attention of the police to quiz the suspect. The suspect claimed he was taking the teenager to her grandmother in Nigeria. But his account was denied by the victim, the police said, and both were taken to the Donkorkrom police station. The mother of the child Mariama Abubakar was therefore sent for and questioned as well. She confirmed to interrogators that the teenager was being sent into forced marriage in Nigeria. Based on the girl’s mother’s account, Abubakar Iddrisu was detained in police custody whilst investigation continues.
