The mid-year budget review to be presented by the Minister of Finance in Parliament has been rescheduled to Monday, July 29.
The delivery by Ken Ofori-Atta was initially scheduled to be done on Wednesday, July 24 but was rescheduled to Monday, July 22.
But the date for the presentation has again been rescheduled to Monday, July 29.
Already, the Minority in Parliament has warned the Minister of Finance, and by extension government, not to make it a “populist, vote-buying gimmick” but to address the hardships currently facing Ghanaians.
The government at a press briefing on Sunday said the exercise by Mr Ofori-Atta will among other things focus on augmenting government revenues to fund the outstanding coordinated programmes of social and economic policies.
Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah told journalists that the mid-year budget review will afford government the opportunity to take a second look at revenue availability to execute the remaining programmes, key among them being infrastructure.
He said already government has commenced efforts to cut some avoidable expenses.
He highlighted the ongoing work on cutting out capacity charges for power that is not consumed as one of those.
“It is our expectation that cutting out avoidable expenses while shoring up revenues will create more fiscal space to fully fund and execute the outstanding programs in the medium term expenditure framework.”
