The National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) is set to investigate the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) document making rounds in the media and purported to be a new curriculum for basic schools.
This ‘Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education in Ghana’ document has generated a lot of public outburst with many kicking against the content of the document, stating it will expose pupils to homosexuality and other sexual orientations that go against national values and norms as Ghanaians.
Following the public outburst, Education Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said at a press conference that no such thing as Comprehensive Sexuality Education has been approved as part of the new curriculum.
Speaking on news analysis program The Key Points on TV3, Saturday, an educationist and member of the Governing Board of NaCCA, Dr. Ahmed Jinapor also reiterated the fact that NaCCA has not approved anything on CSE as part of the curriculum for basic schools.
“So, the point that I am making is that NaCCA as the legitimate body responsible for the approval of our curriculum in terms of this whole Comprehensive Sexuality Education does not know anything about it. It has not been approved by NaCCA, and that has to be stated for the record.”
“As a member of NaCCA, I have not come across any document that says Comprehensive Sexuality Education. No, in fact, I have attended almost every meeting that we’ve had for the past two years that we’ve been on that board, and about once or twice, I did miss a couple of meetings and I clarified with the chairman…, and I went through all the minutes, and nothing of that sought has happened.”
Dr. Jinapor said NaCCA is going to investigate the genesis of the document since it did not go through the Council for approval.
Emergency Meeting
“The subject Comprehensive Sexuality Education has never come before us, never…I happen to be the Chair of the sub committee on Ghanaian languages, nothing has appeared before me.
“If found its way there, and it’s something that I must put on record, NaCCA is going to investigate it. In fact, there is an emergency meeting that has been called for the 9th of October, which is Wednesday.”
Meanwhile, conversations on the supposed new curriculum is still ongoing amongst the public and many including the clergy are kicking against sexuality education for young people at the basic level.
