The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is demanding the closure of all schools opened for the resumption of academic work for final-year students.
The schools were reopened upon a May 31 directive of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
In his Update Number 10 to the nation on his government’s fight against the coronavirus pandemic, President Akufo-Addo announced that night that measures have been taken for schools to reopen for final year students from junior high schools to tertiary institutions.
The tertiary institutions had students reporting on Monday, June 15 while senior high schools had their students next, on Monday, June 22.
Final-year junior high school (JHS) students reported on Monday, June 29.
But since then cases of the virus have been recorded in the schools with most confirmed in senior high schools.
At a press briefing on Monday, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, said the schools were hurriedly reopened under the guise of facilitating the writing of WASSCE.
He said the real motive was to make room for the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to register senior high school students on their campuses.
