Policy think-tank and pressure group OccupyGhana is calling for an independent investigation into  Thursday’s violence at La Bawaleshie in East Legon, a situation which nearly marred the by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency.

OccupyGhana observes that even though the police have issued a statement to the effect that investigations into the matter has commenced, it would rather “propose that an independent body conducts a full-scale inquiry into the matter”.

The call of OccupyGhana as contained in a statement dated Friday, February 1 is premised on the fact that videos which emerged from the crime scene may have implicated the police, for which reason an independent inquiry must be done.

“Some of the video footage that we have seen show that some of the masked men who are accused of the intimidation and violence, and certainly one of the persons who assaulted a Member of Parliament, were in vehicles that bore the name or insignia of the police. The police that stands accused, at the very least, of complicity in these matters, cannot investigate the overall issue of the violence that occurred,” the statement indicated.

OccupyGhana also questions the rationale behind the masking of the faces of the security personnel who were  alleged to have orchestrated the violence at the election centres.

The pressure group finds the act “unacceptable and a gross breach of modern-day policing methods”.

It reiterates its call by urging government to immediately constitute a proper Commission of Inquiry under Chapter 23 of the Constitution to inquire into the matter, stressing no person or group of persons should be allowed to destroy the peace in the country.
