The People’s National Party (PNP) has petitioned the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, on recent cases of human rights abuses under the John Dramani Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in Ghana.
“The People’s National Party is concerned that some actions and policies of the current NDC government are creating a political environment reminiscent of past periods in Ghana’s history, including the PNDC era, where critics and citizens who disagreed with prevailing political practices experienced intimidation and suppression,” it said in the petition dated Tuesday, July 22, 2026.
Signed by Chairperson and Leader Janet Asana Nabla, the petition urged the Commissioner to, among others, monitor developments relating to democracy, human rights and political freedoms under the current NDC government in Ghana, encourage the Government of Ghana to uphold its obligations under
international human rights standards, and take any other appropriate action within the mandate of the United Nations human rights system.
The opposition party cited the recent incarceration of Tik Toker Camilla Alhassan for defamation, the ongoing trial of another Tik Toker Mahama Aminat, the arrests of key opposition figures including the latest 20-year jail of the Ashanti Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and the arrest of the Spokesperson of the flagbearer of the NPP, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, as cases in point.
“We are concerned about allegations of selective prosecution in cases involving financial losses to the state,” PNP stated.
“The perception that cases involving individuals connected to the ruling NDC government may receive different treatment while opposition figures continue to face prosecution creates concerns about fairness, accountability and equal protection under the law.”
It concluded: “The People’s National Party submits this petition because Ghana’s democracy belongs to all Ghanaians, not only those in political power. Protecting democracy today protects future generations.”
