Roads Minister confident Tema-Dawhenya dual carriageway to be completed within two years

The dualisation of the Tema Community 25–Dawhenya road is expected to be completed within the next two years, the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has confirmed.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, November 24, the Minister detailed the restructured approach to the project and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upgrading the vital transport corridor.

Mr Agbodza explained that the project’s first phase encountered delays after the commercial loan approved by Parliament was disrupted during Ghana’s debt restructuring process.

“That project was awarded through a commercial loan by Parliament. Unfortunately, that fell victim to the debt restructuring by a British company which was supposed to be doing Tranche 1,” he said.

With the initial financing arrangement derailed, the government shifted plans for the second phase.

“They were supposed to do Tranche 2 if Tranche 1 went well, but because that stalled, we asked that Tranche 2 be carried as a brand-new Big Push project which First Sky is working on,” he added.

Clarifying the structure of the works, the Minister noted that Tranche 1 focuses on constructing service roads and interchanges, while Tranche 2 entails widening the main carriageway from Community 25 to the Central University.

“Tranche 2 is the main carriageway. Tranche 1 is supposed to be the service road by the side and the interchanges,” he said.

He further disclosed that First Sky Construction has been awarded the Tranche 2 contract and given 24 months to complete the expansion.

Mr Agbodza stressed that the dualisation would bring considerable relief to motorists who rely on the stretch daily.

Once finished, the upgraded road is expected to ease chronic traffic congestion, enhance travel times and improve overall mobility along one of Greater Accra Region’s busiest and fastest-growing corridors.
