Ghana’s annual Kwahu Paragliding Festival has been cancelled as government steps up measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus imported into the country.
Persons registered and paid to participate in the Paragliding festival which was scheduled for this Easter at the Kwahu Ridge in the Eastern Region have been directed to contact the Ghana Tourism Authority further directives.
A statement issued by the Ghana Tourism Authority also announced the postponement all Regional Tourism and the National Tourism Awards planned for March and April.
“The Authority will announce new dates and schedules for these events when the situation normalizes,” it said.
The Authority apologised for inconveniences the cancellations have caused and encouraged the public to adhere to the precautionary measures put in place to prevent the spread of COVID -19.
Seven cases of the global scourge have since March 12 been recorded in Ghana with more cases likely to be recorded in the coming days.
But government has taken a series of measures including a ban on social gatherings for the next four weeks, closure of schools and a ban on non-citizens from countries worst hit by the global pandemic from entering Ghana.
Some 220,000 confirmed cases of the covid-19 pandemic have been recorded globally with over 8,800 deaths.
Although Africa is the least affected continent with some 16 deaths, the WHO is warning Africans to prepare for the worst.
It said strained public health systems could become quickly overwhelmed.
