Wa Poly to be named after Hilla Limann

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has disclosed that the Wa Polytechnic in the Upper West Region will soon be named after late former President Dr Hilla Limann after the completion of all parliamentary processes.

Speaking at the 20th anniversary remembrance celebration of Dr. Hilla Limann on Tuesday, President Akufo-Addo said the board of the academic institution in a meeting on January 18, this year, indicated to the Minister for Education, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, its intention to name the institution after the late Former President Limann.

The President added that the proposal has his blessing and that the proposal will still hold after the Polytechnic is changed into a technical university.

The remembrance celebration was dubbed: ‘The Life of a Scholar, Diplomat and Statesman’.

A section of the event was used to reflect on the life of Dr. Limann as a Scholar, Diplomat and Statesman.

Mrs.  Nabilla Williams reflected on Limann the Scholar, Ambassador D. K. Osei reflected on Limann the Diplomat and Dr.  Edward Mahama reflected on Limann the Statesman.

Hilla Limann Foundation

The Hilla Limann Foundation was formally launched at the event by Leda Limann.

She said the Foundation has its main focus on the promotion of peace as a cornerstone of a stable democracy, fostering of education as an instrument for development and the enhancement of the capacity of the youth to engage in local level-democracy building.

The Man Hilla Limann

Hilla Limann was born on the12th December 1934. He served as the President of Ghana  from 24th September 1979 to 31st December 1981. Limann, whose original last name was Babini, was born in the northern Ghanaian town of Gwolu in the Sissala West District of the Upper West Region to a poor family, however, he managed to gain an excellent education, and took up an academic career.

Hilla completed his basic school education at the Government Middle School, Tamale, in 1949. Between 1957 and 1960, he studied Political Science at the London School of Economics. He subsequently completed a Diploma in French at the Sorbonne University, France. He also obtained a BA (Hons) degree in History at the University of London and a Ph.D in Political Science and Constitutional Law at the University of Paris.
