Health service providers at the Yendi Municipal Hospital have lamented over attacks and backlash received from the community in the discharge of their duties.
They say there is no cooperation in service delivery between residents and the hospital staff.
The service providers complain frequent attacks and insults on nurses by patients and relatives of these patients are becoming too many.
Speaking at the Second Open Day held by the hospital to solicit views and suggestions from community members, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr. Ayuba Abdulai, said there is no cooperation between the hospital and the community.
He said a section of the community and the Hospital’s staff have been embroiled in negative and dangerous polemics, which must be dealt with.
“The issue of a secret tape recording by a client which got the Judicial Service to intervene as well as the attacks on the personality of staffs has been a worry to us as a facility.”
Dr. Abdulai added that the unnecessary tagging of staff to political factions also needs to be stopped since it exposes workers to attacks.
He further said despite these attacks and accusations, management of the hospital and workers still go out of their way to deliver on the job, adding that the hospital has made significant strides in health care delivery.
“Currently, our Intensive Care Unit equipped with ultra-modern equipment is second to none in the entire country which has reduced both maternal mortality and post surgery complications.”
Dr. Abdulai commended the Ministry of Health for introducing herbal medical care to the health delivery system.
He mentioned the department has reviewed 170 patients since the introduction.
A resident, Mohammed Musah, who was at the Open Day Ceremony, commended the efforts of the authorities for their hard work, but cautioned staff who take advantage of innocent clients to desist from such.
He also appealed to the hospital management to ensure their oxygen supply is consistent.
The Yendi Municipal Hospital was established in the 17th century by Germans.
It was upgraded to the status of a Municipal Hospital in 1994, and serves as a referral center for about ten adjoining districts including Zabzugu, Bimbilla, Wulensi, Gusheigu, Tatale among others.
The hospital has 13 functional units and renders In- and Out-patient services, maternity services and Paediatrics among many others.
In 2017, the hospital recorded over 62,000 OPD cases. The number increased to 67,000 in 2018 with Malaria topping the list.
