Government will from December 5 begin construction work on the biggest ever fishing port complex within West Africa at Jamestown in Accra.
The 50 million-dollar facility being financed with a grant from China, will be in three phases with the first involving 118,000 cubic-meter dredging harbour basin and shipping channels.
The second component will compose of the construction of about 1,200-meter hydraulic structures composed of berths, seawall and break water.
The third component will see the construction of administration, production and supporting facilities, including an office building, a processing area, trading market, a kindergarten, commercial area and other production and supporting facilities.
Ahead of construction work, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Mrs. Afoley Quaye on Friday paid a courtesy call on the Ga chiefs as part of stakeholder consultations.
The Ga Traditional Council lauded government for such initiative, which Nii Doodo Nsaki said holds the prospect of reviving the once vibrant fishing industry in Accra.
Mrs. Quaye urged the chiefs to cooperate with government in getting occupants of the landing beach to relocate for a smooth commencement of the construction.
She was hopeful the project would enhance the productivity of the fishers and create about 1,000 job opportunities.
Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayi Bonte II, expressed concerns about failed earlier promises of successive governments to construct the James Town landing site, and thus appealed to the Minister to follow through with the plan to boost economic activities in the Gamashie Traditional area.
