[Slides] Gov’t unveils small-scale ban lifting guidelines

The government Thursday unveiled some guidelines which will guide mining operations, especially small-scale mining in Ghana when the ban on small-scale mining is finally lifted.

It is expected that the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will today announce the lifting of the ban on small-scale mining which has been in place since his government assumed office.

Lifting of the ban would mean small-scale miners who have been vetted and cleared by the Inter-Ministerial committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) can go back to work in a much more regulated environment.

The government has also put in place measures to keep the mining sector under surveillance using drones. This technology is expected to enhance supervision of the sector by linking all agencies that are connected with the issuance of licenses.

In order not for the public to misconstrue what a lift on the ban would mean, the government provided an operational definition to that effect emphasizing the ban does not in any way legalize illegal mining, commonly referred to as “Galamsey”.

The presentation spelled out how operations in the mining sector are going to be handled moving forward.
