Parliament’s Privileges Committee has suspended hearing on the alleged contempt case brought before it by Member for Asawase Constituency Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed against the Member for Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.
The Committee had sat on Wednesday to hear from Alhaji Muntaka, the complainant, but was served with a notice of motion by lawyers for the defendant.
Speaking in an interview with TV3’s Evelyn Tengmaa on Thursday, Vice Chairman of the Privileges Committee Andrew Kofi Mercer explained that though the Committee has been clothed with powers to continue hearing, a decision was taken to consider the motion.
“We deliberated on the issue and came to the conclusion that having regard to the fact that we have been given notice, it will be inappropriate for us to proceed,” he said.
He added that one member, however, disagreed.
The Sekondi MP stated, however, that lawyers of the complainant objected to the motion.
The motion will mean that the issue has to be discussed on the floor of Parliament for a decision whether the Committee proceeds with its hearing or not.
The issue borders on hot exchanges between the two legislators on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, January 30.
But for the timely intervention of some MPs, the two MPs would have physically assaulted each other.
