The fate of the pupils of the Kori Primary and Junior High School at Sandema in the Builsa North district of the Upper East Region hung in the balance as the rainy season sets in.
The early rains of the season have rendered the only linking-bridge on the road leading to the school useless, compelling authorities to close the school each time the clouds gather.
Pupils are also unable to go to school each time it rains because the road, 3news.com gathers, becomes inaccessible.
A source close to the school reports that until the rains set in, the school was already faced with a situation where pupils sit on mats under open structures and under trees to learn. This, our source explains that even if the road is accessible, the school will still have been be closed if it threatens to rain because some of the pupils do not have classrooms.
The source reveals there is always a drastic reduction in attendance on rainy days.
Community not on national grid
The bad nature of the road is also partly blamed for the Kori community’s inability to get electricity. We gather some electricity poles have been allocated for the community to be connected to the national grid but the challenge has been how to carry them to the community.
Farmers who use tractors and other farm machinery to prepare their lands ahead of the rainy season are unable to do so because vehicles are unable to use the road linking the community to the town.
