Two people have been arrested by the Assin Fosu Police Command in connection with the shooting of five executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and six residents of Assin Aworoso in the Assin South District of the Central Region.
The two are a 42-year-old man who gave his name as ‘Teacher’ and a 45-year-old Kofi Yevu.
The two are expected to be taken to court for prosecution on Wednesday, August 28, after police investigations.
The Central Regional Police Public Affairs Director, DSP Irene Oppong, who confirmed this to Ouna FM’s Yen Sempa on Tuesday, explained that “we have gotten one person, Daniel Owusu, the assembly man for Assin Aworoso Electoral Area who has come to report to the police”.
“He is the only one the police have identified. He said some others have been injured but we have not gotten them so we urged them to report to the police for medical forms to be issued to them and to help us with our investigations”.
The PRO said “[the victims] would be given medical forms to go to the hospital and to help us with investigations”.
Arrest
“We have arrested two people who are helping us with the investigations. We had locally manufactured guns from them after a search and they are helping with the investigations,” she added.
DSP Oppong noted that “we arrested them [on Monday, August 26, 2019] and they are in our custody. We shall take them to court within 48-hours”.
The Assin South Constituency Assistant Secretary of the NPP, Oppong Amoateng, told Yen Sempa host Bright Kwasi Asempa that those arrested were the landlord of the house where the gun shots were fired from and a tenant in the house at that moment who they suspect is an NDC member.
What transpired?
Narrating what transpired on Sunday, Mr. Oppong Amoateng said some executives of the constituency went to Assin Aworoso Electoral Area and Nyame Bekyere for a mini-rally to rekindle the spirit of the party.
He added that moment after the mini-rally at Assin Aworoso Electoral Area, some unidentified men allegedly opened fire on the executives while they were stepping out of the church where they held the meeting.
Mr. Oppng Amoateng said the gun shots hit five executives and six other residents but the assembly member was the hardest hit in the head.
He added that the assembly member was rushed to a nearby chip compound and later transferred to Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu.
Direction of the gun shots
Asked whether they spotted where the gun shots came from, the NPP Secretary said “if we look at the direction, it came from a house and the house owner has been arrested by Assin Fosu police”.
“We heard the one who fired the shot was an NDC man but that is up to the police to determine because it’s a crime so the law must take its course.”
The 11 victims are currently receiving treatment at the Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu.
