Aggrieved National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters from Asawase in the Ashanti Region have besieged their regional headquarters in Kumasi in a bid to prevent regional executives from entering their offices.
The supporters Thursday morning blocked the road leading to the regional headquarters amidst burning of car tyres to protest the disqualification of Mubarick Masawudu as parliamentary aspirant in the NDC primary in Asawase.
Locks on the entrance to the building have been replaced by the protesters who appear unyielding in their demands.
“The Ashanti regional police command led by the deputy Regional commander ACP David Agyemang Adjen is at premises to intervene but protesters are resisting,” Kumasi-based Ankoma FM correspondent Kwame Agyekum reports.
Our correspondent reports that “no executive has been there since morning,” but said that has not caused the protesters to stop demonstrating.
The protesters are said to have been peaceful as their leaders have advised and prevented them from causing damage to properties, though have been burning the tyres.
Two padlocks on security doors leading to the offices have been broken by the protesters who replaced them with their own padlocks.

The aggrieved supporters say it is undemocratic for the party to allow the incumbent Member of Parliament, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, to go unopposed as the party’s candidate for the 2020 parliamentary elections.
Our correspondent Beatrice Spio Garbrah reported Wednesday that the supporters have threatened to vote against the NDC candidate in 2020 if the party fails to reverse what they deemed to be an imposition.
Masawudu Mubarick, who intended contesting the incumbent MP petitioned the national leadership of the party over what he said were deliberates attempts to frustrate his candidature.
Polls in the Asawase constituency were therefore put on hold in the recent primaries of the National Democratic Congress.
However, a press statement issued by the Party’s General Secretary on Tuesday said the Functional Executives Committee of the party has disqualified Mubarick Masawudu to allow the incumbent MP, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak to go unopposed.
This decision has not gone down well with supporters of the disqualified aspirant who thronged to his residence to protest on Wednesday.
