President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed the Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu, to proceed on leave with immediate effect.
Mr Asante-Apeatu is due to begin his retirement from August 14 having served as the IGP for two-and-a half years.
His deputy, COP, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, has been asked to act until a substantive IGP is appointed in accordance with the constitution, a statement from the presidency announced.
COP Oppong-Boanuh was due to retire from service in October last year, but less than a month to that, he was given a year extension from October 2018 to end on October 7, 2019.
He was subsequently appointed deputy IGP on September 25, 2018.
“The President thanked him [Asante Apeatu] for his many years of service to the country, and wished him well in his retirement,” the statement signed by Director of Communication at the presidency, Eugene Arhin said.
Mr Asante-Apeatu was the Director-General in charge of Research and Planning before he was appointed IGP in January 2017 following the retirement of Mr John Kudalor.
On August 15, 2015, he had his contract was extended for two more years based on the recommendation of the Police Council.
