Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, journalist, writer and son of Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has died in Cairo, Egypt.
The Nkrumah family announced his passing in a statement, saying he died peacefully following a prolonged illness.
He had been receiving care at a rehabilitation centre after suffering a stroke.
“It is with profound sadness that the Nkrumah family announces the passing of Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah,” the statement said.
The family described him as a respected journalist, writer and intellectual who remained deeply committed to the ideals of justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity throughout his life.
A voice on Africa and the world
As a journalist and commentator, Gamal dedicated his voice and intellect to examining the political, social and cultural forces shaping Africa and the wider world, the family said.
It described him as a man of profound intellectual curiosity, independence of thought and quiet conviction, who carried forward, in his own distinctive way, the enduring legacy of his father while building a life and reputation grounded in his own principles and achievements.
The family said his passing is a profound loss not only to relatives and loved ones, but also to the wider community of friends, colleagues and readers who valued his insight, humanity and unwavering engagement with the great questions of our time.
The Nkrumah family said it remembers Gamal with immense love, gratitude and pride, adding that his wisdom, kindness and devotion to the values he held dear will remain an enduring source of inspiration.
It thanked all who stood with him during his illness, particularly the medical professionals and caregivers in Cairo who provided him with care and dignity.
It also extended its appreciation to the governments and people of Egypt and Ghana, which it described as his two countries, for their generous support.
The family has requested privacy as it mourns, and said details of memorial arrangements and opportunities to pay tribute to his life and legacy will be communicated in due course.
“May he rest in eternal peace,” the family said.
