Karpowership arrives in Sekondi

The 470 megawatts Krandeniz Powership Osman Khan on Thursday arrived at the anchorage of the Home Port of the Western Naval Command at Sekondi in the Western Region.

The powership propelled itself from Tema to the Western Region.

The powership was moored to its jetty within the navel command where it will be connected to 10 kilometer marine and onshore gas pipeline from the metering station of the Ghana National Gas Company.

After it settles, the powership will continue to use heavy fuel oil (HFO) until in the middle of November 2019 when it will be connected to natural gas.

  • Shutdown “won’t adversely impact electricity supply” – GRIDCo

It will require 90 million standard cubic feet of gas daily (MMSCFD).

Construction work on the jetty at Sekondi started in August last year.

It also saw the construction and the expansion and reinforcement of the breakwater from 2 meters to 4 meters.

Managing Director of Karpowership Ghana Company Limited Volkan Buyukbicer told journalists they are on course to connect to the national grid in fifteen days time, our correspondent Eric Yaw Adjei reported.

“We have achieved the first stage of the big move, we say, the relocation of the 470 megawatts Powership to Sekondi Naval Base. It is very important for the energy sector recovery programme in order to utilize the Sankofa Gas”.

He said the first stage of the relocation has been successful.

“We are here at Sekondi and just had a successful mooring operation and now we are ready to try the Powership.

Mr. Buyukbicer stated that “this afternoon we will commence the connection of the transmission lines which will enable us to connect electricity to the national grid.

“We are looking at 15 more days to generate electricity”, he said

He explained how significant the relocation will be to the country’s power generation.

“Gas is more environmentally friendly than HFO. It is also efficient and will save Ghana millions of dollars every month compared to HFO. Due to some contractual arrangement we expect this relocation to guarantee more efficiency in the energy sector”.
