Midwives at the Salaga Government Hospital in the Savannah Region are appealing for support for a 28-year-old woman who successfully delivered quadruplets.
According to them, Lydia Grumah is unable to produce enough breast milk to feed the four babies, forcing them to contribute cash on daily basis to buy baby food supplement to feed the newborns.
Lydia was rushed to the Salaga Government Hospital on August 31 at about 3:00 a.m.
She was brought to the facility with two babies who were delivered at the St. Joseph’s Clinic at Chamba.
On arrival, a third baby who had a transverse lie was delivered.
Unknown to the midwives on duty, a fourth baby was still in the womb. but this time in a cephalic presentation.
Maternity ward in charge, Ms Genevieve Bakari, explained the mother and babies are in good condition, however, the mother is unable to produce enough breast milk to feed the babies.
“The babies are doing well, as well as the mother but the stress of delivering quadruplets is affecting the mother psychologically thus her inability to produce enough breast milk” she stated.
Currently, she said, the babies are surviving on NAN, a supplementary food for babies.
“We are unable to discharge them because the mother will not be able to buy the supplementary feed due to her situation,” she explained.
She has thus appealed to the public, particularly philanthropists to come to the aid of the woman and support her to be able to feed herself and the babies.
Lydia expressed gratitude to the midwives for their support, stating “as for the nurses, I can’t thank them enough because had it not been them, these babies will die of hunger”
Meanwhile, Ms Bakari said the woman has been taken through family planning.
