Stena Forth set sail for Ghana on ‘historic drilling’ expedition

A six-generation drillship has set sail for Ghana where it is expected to commence drilling at the West Cape Three Points Block 2 (WCTP Block 2) for a Ghanaian oil and gas firm.

The Ghanaian company, Springfield Exploration & Production Limited, will use the Stena Forth rig to drill at the West Cape Three Points Block 2 on an initial three-well campaign.

Stena Forth was engaged by Tullow for its Guyana operations.

This becomes the second time the drillship is coming to Ghana. It previously delivered for Tullow, best-in-class safety and operational performance.

The 10-year old dynamically positioned drillship has a maximum water depth of 10,000ft and maximum drilling depth of 35,000ft.

It is capable of drilling in water depths up to 10,000’ using 18 3⁄4” – 15,000psi Cameron TL BOP and Cameron Load King Riser.

“The countdown begins!!! The Stena Forth’s journey to Ghana has finally begun; in the next few weeks our history-making drilling campaign will commence,” chief executive of Springfield Group, Kevin Okyere said Monday.

The feat, he explained in an Instagram post, will see his company become “the first independent African energy company to drill in deep water”.

The additional rig capacity will enable Tullow to carry out simultaneous drilling and completion activity, allowing the tie-in of new wells to be brought forward.

Under the contract, Stena will first target the Oak-1x well on trend with the Beech discovery, made on the Deep Water Tano Cape Three Points block (DWT/CTP) to the south-west of WCTP Block 2.

The next well, Afina-1x, will test the Cenomanian oil potential on a similar play fairway to discovered resources to the east of WCTP Block 2. Springfield continues to work to firm up further drilling locations on the highly prospective WCTP Block 2.

Springfield acquired the 673-square kilometre block and subsequently ratified by Parliament in March 2016, making it the first indigenous company to have a majority stake in an oil block.

Springfield E&P is the majority shareholder, with Ghana government’s exploration company, GNPC Exploration and Production Company Limited, having minority interest.
