Gunmen have shot dead a sub chief at Saka in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region and injured one of his sons in a bizarre circumstance.
The three gunmen shot the chief, Salifu Mustapha, in the head twice, killing him instantly.
One of his three sons, who were with him at the time of the incident which occurred last Sunday night at his residence, was also shot in the stomach leaving him with injuries.
The Police at Zebilla have commenced investigations into the incident to establish the motive and the perpetrators behind the gruesome act.
According to the police, the gunmen stormed the house of the chief at about 8:20 p.m. Sunday and ordered him and his three sons to lie prostrate which they obliged.
They then shot the chief twice, the police said, adding one of his sons who raised his head to check what had happened was also shot in the stomach.
The injured son has since been taken to the Zebilla Government Hospital where he’s receiving treatment while the body of the chief was deposited at the Bolgatanga mortuary.
Supt. Adam Ahmed Mahama told 3news.com that they received a telephone call about the incident and dispatched personnel to the area but the perpetrators had fled at from the scene by the time they arrived there.
A random search was conducted and they retrieved four empty cells and a necklace.
Supt Mahama said the body of the chief was on March 31 released to the family for burial in accordance with Muslim tradition.
Although the motive for which the sub chief murder was killed remain unclear, his brother, a brother of the deceased suspects it was as a result of a land and chieftaincy dispute in the area.
The killing of the sub chief caused uneasy calm in the area.
Mr. Bukari Abugre has therefore called on the police and the other security agencies in the Bawku west district to intensify efforts to arrest the suspects in order to bring calm to the area.
Assembly member for Saka electoral area, Alou David Apiidam, also called on the police to intensify surveillance and patrolling of the area to protect the people.
