Ghana’s coronavirus cases have risen from 313 to 378, the president has disclosed.
In a nationwide broadcast on Thursday night, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said despite the rising records, Ghana has been modestly successful in containing the virus.
The first two cases of Covid-19 were recorded on Thursday, March 12.
As of the time the president addressed the nation, the number of confirmed cases stood at 313.
But he said government’s 3Ts approach of testing, tracing and treatment is yielding good results.
So far, 37,405 contacts of the index patients have been traced.
Out of that number, 31,933 were identified in Accra while 5,472 were identified in Kumasi.
It was carried out by a team of 450 health professionals with the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
The president noted that as of Wednesday, 14,611 samples of the contacts traced have undergone tests.
Fifty-two of the tests conducted at the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research (NMIMR) in Accra came out positive. This represents 0.46 per cent.
Twenty-five of the tests conducted at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research in Tropical Medicine (KCCR) in Kumasi were found to be positive. This represents 0.06 per cent.
“Whilst the result are encouraging and suggesting a limited number of positives and community spread, we expect to be able to test some 10,000 additional samples in the coming week to give us a clearer picture to enable us take a decision on the way forward.”
President Akufo-Addo was happy with the measures taken by his government so far.
“It appears that our common efforts have been modestly successful in containing the virus and minimising the spread.
“Undoubtedly, the decisions taken from Day One to act quickly and decisively and impose what may have seemed like harsh restrictions have now proven to be effective and have saved a lot of lives.”
He, however, admitted that the fight is not yet over.
“We are by no means out of the woods yet.”
Four persons have so far beaten the virus with six losing their lives.
