The former Rector of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Joshua Alabi says Ghanaians are yearning for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to form the next government, following what he assessed as a shambolic performance of the Akufo-Addo-led government.
Mr. Alabi made these observations known on Wednesday, February 22, when he picked the nomination forms on behalf of former President John Dramani Mahama to enable him to contest in the presidential election of the NDC.
“We are here to pick up the forms for his HE John Dramani Mahama. As you are aware we are in very difficult times in this country, the economy is in shambles, people are suffering and the summary here is that people are crying for the NDC to come back.
“The NDC has gone through all its structures, and elections, it is time to come for the flagbearer to deliver the 2024 elections,” he told journalists.
The largest opposition party on Wednesday opened nominations for aspirants seeking to contest as presidential and parliamentary candidates on the ticket of the NDC in the 2024 general elections.
Mr. Alabi who once contested Mahama in the party’s internal flagbearership race has touted Mr. Mahama as the ideal person Ghana needs on its way to economic recovery, and to bring back hope to the citizenry.
He underscored: “Ghanaians are asking for a well-experienced leader, leadership counts. If leadership counts then experience is the key, one who has done it before and one who is very humble, one who loves the people and one who believes in people-centered policies. Fortunately for us in the NDC, as a country, we have somebody like that.
“We are here to pick his form and to work for him and work for the NDC and work for the people of Ghana.
“On January 2025 NDC will be forming the new government under the leadership of HE John Dramani Mahama.”
Former President Mahama declared his intention to contest for the NDC flagbearership on Tuesday when the Minority caucus in Parliament called on him.
Mr. Mahama is said to have received overwhelming endorsement from the MPs.
At least three leading members of the NDC including a former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, have made known their intention to give Mr. Mahama a run for his money for the presidential slot.
Meanwhile, the party’s Functional Executive Committee has put on hold the parliamentary primaries in 23 constituencies.
Majority of these constituencies are in the Ashanti region which is the stronghold of the governing New Patriotic Party.
