This isn’t time to go to church – Christian Council

The General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev Cyril Fayose, says as long as the number of COVID-19 cases keep rising in Ghana, the churches should continue to remain closed.

He told Alfred Ocansey on the Sunrise Show on 3FM Thursday May 21 that any decision to reopen the churches in the midst of the increasing cases of COVDI-19 in Ghana would mean the country shooting itself in the foot as far as the fight against the pandemic is concerned.

As part of the efforts to deal with the problem, President Nana Addo Dakwa Akufo-Addo placed a ban on all social gathering including church services.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ghana has risen to 6,269 as at May 20, according to the Ghana Health Service.

But the number of recoveries has risen to 1,898 from 1,773. The death toll remains the same – 31.

Rev Cyril Fayose said the government must give deeper considerations into the decision to reopen churches.

“As far as the numbers are going up we think it is not time to go to church. Remember the churches form a huge part of the total population of Ghana, we are 71.2%.

“So any decision to lift the restrictions for us to go back to our normal ways of doing things must be thought through very carefully so that it doesn’t end up shooting us in the foot,” he said.
