The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) has sent invitation letters to members of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) for a meeting on Wednesday, May 27.
The sole agenda of the meeting is: ‘Updates on 2020 Registration Exercise’.
The meeting has been divided into two groups.
According to the letter sighted by 3news.com, the groups were created based on the president’s directive, banning social gatherings, particularly of more than 25 persons.
The first meeting, which will come off at 10:00am, will have one representative each from political parties such as the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the People’s National Convention (PNC), the Convention People’s Party (CPP), the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), civil society groups like the Institute for Democratic Development Ghana (IDEG), state institutions such as the National Media Commission, Ghana Police Service and diplomatic corps such as Canadian High Commission and the British High Commission.
The second group, made up of the likes of National Democratic Party (NDP), All People’s Congress (APC), Jacob Osei Yeboah, the US Embassy, Penplusbytes, the Dutch Embassy and the Danish Embassy, will meet at 2:00pm and have one representative each from them.
The EC had originally scheduled Saturday, April 18 for the start of the registration but that plan was rocked by the outbreak of coronavirus in Ghana.
The country’s elections-management body is said to have scheduled next month for the exercise, reason why it wants to update the stakeholders.
The decision to compile a new register has been met with resistance from notable groups like the NDC, which claim the existing register is more credible to be used for the elections.
