Manya Krobo: Irate residents protest private burial over health concerns

Residents of Kodjona-Menekpo are against the burial of another resident on a private land in the community.

They raise concerns that the land for the burial was close to a dug-out well, which could be infected.

Again, they say the community is a waterlogged area in a downstream, which should not be approved for burial purposes.

The land for burial, however, belongs to the deceased, whose name has been given as Gyebi Lawer.

The family intends to bury him on the land after acquiring permit from the Lower Manya Krobo Environmental Health Department.

But residents, clad in red on Tuesday afternoon, kicked against the move.

Spokesperson of the irate residents James Teye said “our area is a waterlogged one [and] I don’t know why it should be approved for a private burial”.

“There is a dugout well close by. We could have a possible transmission from the body when it decays. We were assured chemicals would be used but we don’t agree. They should bury the decease at any of the community cemeteries.”

The Manya Krobo Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Gordon Amevor, confirmed issuing the permit but allayed fears of the residents.

Burial is expected to take place on Saturday, May 30.

The Assemblyman for the Kodjonya Electoral Area, Gabriel Tettey, said solutions rest with the Municipal Security Council headed by the Municipal Chief Executive.

“I have met the unit committee people and community members and those the land belongs to. They have permit. There is tension in the area now. The people with the permit have security backing, the final solutions rest with the MCE and the entire Municipal Security Council.”
