Ghana Airports Company Limited has launched the 2025 Safety and Environment Week at Kotoka International Airport, renewing its push to strengthen safety standards and promote environmental stewardship across the country’s airports.
The week-long observance is being held under the theme “Optimizing Safety and Environment in a 24-Hour Economy.” Officials say the theme reflects the growing pressure on airports to operate efficiently and sustainably as travel demand increases.
Managing Director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare said the initiative aligns with GACL’s broader commitment to advancing Total Safety Management and improving environmental performance systemwide. She stressed the need for deeper collaboration across the aviation industry to support safe, resilient and environmentally responsible airport operations.

“We are committed to enhancing our Safety and Environmental Management Systems, and this week reminds us of the collective responsibility we share,” Opare said. She encouraged staff to actively participate in scheduled activities, including Foreign Object Debris (FOD) walks, workshops and safety site visits.
A key moment of the launch was the signing of the Aviation Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) pledge, which outlines GACL’s commitments in several thematic areas: environmental protection, community empowerment, accountability, innovation-driven growth, health and safety resilience and green financing.
Officials described the pledge as an important step in embedding sustainability practices across airport operations, particularly as global aviation continues to shift toward lower emissions and resource efficiency.
The event also featured the presentation of awards to departments and partner organizations recognized for outstanding contributions to safety excellence and environmental sustainability.
Representatives from Customs, ground handling companies and other aviation stakeholders attended the launch, underscoring the sector-wide interest in improving safety and environmental performance.
This year’s celebration is supported by Imexco Group of Companies, Swissport, Aviance Ghana Ltd., AHS Menzies, Servair Ghana, Earth Synergy Initiative, Amandi Ltd. and PassionAir. Organizers said the sponsorship highlights growing private-sector support for sustainable aviation in Ghana.
