Police have restored order in Kwame Danso after a violent mob attack on the town’s District Court and Police Headquarters on Wednesday, prompting the temporary closure of both facilities, the Bono East Regional Police Command said in a statement.
The unrest began around 10:30 a.m. when about 100 youths stormed the Kwame Danso District Court while proceedings were underway. According to police, the group vandalized furniture, fans and other property before seizing two accused persons who were standing trial. The mob also allegedly assaulted the complainant in the case.
Police say the violence later spread to the District Police Headquarters, where two officers on duty were attacked and the station was vandalized.
A reinforcement team from the Atebubu Division, supported by a detachment from the Formed Police Units, intervened to disperse the crowd and restore calm.
Following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, the Kwame Danso Police Station and District Police Headquarters have been shut down, and all personnel have been reassigned to other parts of the region until further notice. The move, police say, is intended to protect officers while investigations continue.
The Regional Command condemned the incident and vowed to bring all perpetrators to justice. “The Command assures the public that it will pursue and track down all persons connected to this criminal act,” the statement said. “Perpetrators will be identified, arrested and made to face the full consequences of the law.”
No fatalities have been reported, but police did not immediately disclose the extent of injuries or damage.
Authorities are urging residents to remain calm as security operations and investigations proceed.
