Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has expressed worry that there are still arms and weapons with residents in Bawku in the Upper East Region.

For a de-escalation of the situation, he recommends that government finds a safe place to direct all residents to give up their arms.

“Whiles talking to them, I also realized that arms and weapons were there, and all those we spoke to I think we can find a way to get a safe place for them to go and leave it,” the Asantehene stated while submitting his mediation report to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, December 16.

“Maybe, an appeasement of some GH¢500 not by the government but by the National Peace Council, myself and some people.

“I tested the pulse and I know it can be done so now it is left with you to implement what we have said.”

The Asantehene concluded mediation on the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy dispute on Monday, December 1.

He started these efforts in 2023 after successfully mediating a similar crisis in Dagbon.

“By the Grace of God, we are able to assemble here to present to Your Excellency the report of the mission you entrusted to us,” he said on Tuesday.

“We present the report for your kind consideration and whatever action you and your government consider appropriate.”

President Mahama commended the Asantehene for his efforts and assured him that government will issue a blueprint on the report within 24 hours.

“I am pleased about Otumfuo’s report and I can assure him that government would look at this report and within the next 24 hours government will issue a statement on its definitive position on the report.”
