Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has maintained his status as the clear favourite to win January 31’s presidential primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) , a new survey by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Ghana has reported.
In its new report released on Tuesday, December 16, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia maintained his pre-election status as the clear favourite, with an overwhelming 69.7 percent lead over the other contenders.
KAS conducted two separate polls; among NPP delegates and the general Ghanaian populace (non-delegates), and in both, Dr Bawumia emerged winner, eventhough he established clear lead among NPP delegates.
Among NPP delegates, who go to the polls on January 31, Dr Bawumia had 67.8% favouring him, while his closest contender was Kennedy Agyapong, who polled 21.3%.
Dr Bryan Acheampong followed with 6.6% and the remaining candidates – Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong each had less than 5%.
Among non-delegates, that is the general Ghanaian population, Dr Bawumia polled 50.6% and Kennedy Agyapong polled 29.8%, Dr. Bryan Acheampong 8.7% and the rest polled small single digits.
Ahead of NPP’s primaries. Dr. Bawumia has consistently led independent surveys on the election, which have mostly placed him as clear favourite to win the primaries and be retained as the NPP’s Presidential Candidate for the 2028 election.

The survey, according Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Ghana, included responses of over 5000 NPP delegates and more than 13,000 citizens (non-delegates), which they said, “reflects a highly inclusive and diverse national sample with strong representation across all age groups” with “core ages between 26–55, across urban, peri-urban, and rural areas (41% rural).
The demographics also included ”different educational and employmentbackgrounds, religions (Christian 74%, Muslim 22%) and across all ethnic groups.
“These demographics ensure that the results reflect the views of a wide cross-section of Ghanaian society,” the report added.
