A Koforidua High Court has dismissed an election petition brought against the Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa.
The petition was filed by the Parliamentary Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prince Addo.
In its ruling on Thursday, December 18, the High Court held that the petitioner failed to provide sufficient grounds to overturn the results declared by the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC).
The judge described the petition as lacking merit and slapped a GH¢200,000 damage on the petitioner.
Reacting to the ruling, fellow MP Sammi Awuku said the decision brings an end to the “tortuous journey”.
The Akwapim North MP said Protozoa “can now fully focus on serving the good people of Suhum without any further distractions”.
Protozoa was declared winner after the polls were re-collated at the National Police Training School in Tesano due to security challenges at the Constituency Collation Center in Suhum.
He polled 16,855 out of the total valid votes cast to beat NDC’s Prince Addo, who polled 15,259. Independent Candidate Kwadjo Asante polled 14,860.
