Over 3,000 military structures disinfected in Ashanti Region

More than 3,000 structures within military installations in the Ashanti Region have been disinfected against the deadly novel coronavirus.

The exercise started from the Military Central Command headquarters at Sofoline through the Old Baracks at Bantama to the 4 Infantry Battalion, also at the Sofoline area in Kumasi.

From Tuesday to Wednesday, various facilities within the military installations including bungalows for personnel, quarters for sergeants and warrant officers, officers mess, churches and mosques, schools, shops and clinics were all disinfected with the WHO-approved chemical.

Some personnel who spoke to 3news.com expressed delight in the exercise conducted by the leading waste management experts in the country, Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

For them, the exercise has come at the right time considering that coronavirus cases keep rising in the country with the Ashanti Region having the second highest number of cases and deaths.

Zoomlion has since the outbreak of the deadly coronavirus pandemic been at the forefront of the fight through the disinfestation and disinfection of various public places including market centres, schools, churches and mosques among others.

The government through the Defence Ministry contracted Zoomlion to use its expertise and state-of-the-art equipment to disinfect all military installations across the country against covid-19 which has now claimed 66 lives in Ghana.

The disinfection exercise which was launched last week Monday has so far been conducted in the Northern Region, Bono Region, Greater Accra Region and the Western Regions.

General Manager for Zoomlion Ghana Limited in the Ashanti Region, Philip Yeboah Asante advised that the facilities were disinfected again after three months in line with the WHO protocol.

“Normally the practice is that every quarter you need to disinfect, so after three months, we think we should be given the nod to come and disinfect the place again,” he suggested.

He underscored the need for the military personnel and officers to continue to adhere to the covid-19 safety protocols despite the disinfection exercise.

Ghana’s covid-19 situation

Ghana on Wednesday recorded its biggest single-day jump in coronavirus deaths and new infections, two weeks after government eased the country’s covid-19 restrictions.

Eight more deaths have been announced Wednesday to bring the total casualties to 66 from the previous 58 cases, while additional 397 new cases have also been confirmed, all within the last 24 hours.

The country’s case count now stands at 12,590 with a significant jump in the number of active cases which is now 8,114.

The number of recoveries has also gone up marginally from the previous 4,326 to 4,410; an increase of 88.

New figures released by the Ghana Health Service Wednesday afternoon showed six of the new deaths were reported in the Ashanti region which has the second highest number of covid-19 cases in the country while the remaining two were from the Greater Accra Region.

Aged between 33 and 69 years, all but two of the deceased had underlying health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell.
