Coronavirus treatment centres in the Ashanti Region are full to capacity, health authorities have said

Alternatives, according to them, are currently being explored to augment the 18-bed centre at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the 20-bed centre at Kumasi South Hospital.

The Regional Health Directorate is now seeking places to admit and treat more coronavirus patients as the country’s case count surges.

“As at now we have a total of 38 beds at our treatment centres and they are all full. What we have decided to do is to expand the number of beds we have at our treatment centres at Kumasi South and Komfo Anokye,” Dr Emmanuel Tinkorang told journalists Wednesday

With a total of 2,403 coronavirus cases, the region has the second highest count in the country with 38 deaths after the Greater Accra region with a total of 7,573 cases.

Only one person with covid-19 in the Ashanti Region is currently critically ill.

A total of 97 health workers in the Ashanti Region have contracted the deadly novel coronavirus in line of duty. One of them, a Medical Director of the Kwadaso SDA Hospital has died while 14 have since recovered.

Health workers affected include 18 doctors and 47 nurses, as well as administrators and cleaners.

The health directorate is worried about the increasing cases of COVID-19 in the region.

Mr Tinkorang who is the Regional Health Director is worried about the increasing cases number of Covid-19 case in the region.

Dr Tinkorang

He has thus called for strict adherence to the preventive covid-19 protocols to reduce the increasing positive cases.

Meanwhile he said a clinical analysis of covid-19 deaths in the Ashanti region has revealed diverse signs and symptoms of the disease, something he noted, is unidentical to classical cases.

Results of the analysis of the deaths he indicated, has revealed patients who report malaria-like sickness are later confirmed positive for the novel coronavirus pandemic.

He is consequently pushing for a national review of the classical signs and symptoms of covid-19 to help reduce the risk of exposure of health workers.
