Ghana police are investigating a fatal shooting involving a policewoman and a taxi driver near Weija in the Greater Accra Region, the Police Service said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on 19 January 2026 around the Tetegu area, according to a police press release issued on 20 January. Preliminary investigations indicate that a policewoman allegedly shot a taxi driver following a confrontation.
The driver, who was operating a Hyundai i10 taxi cab, was rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.
Investigators further disclosed that the policewoman sustained injuries after the shooting. She was reportedly struck by a vehicle while attempting to leave the scene, suffering injuries to her head and both legs. She is currently on admission and receiving medical attention.
Police said several exhibits were recovered from the scene, including one live 9mm round, a magazine and one empty 9mm cartridge, which are expected to form part of the ongoing investigations.
The Ghana Police Service did not release the identities of either the deceased driver or the policewoman involved. It said investigations are continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities assured the public that further updates would be provided as the probe progresses. The statement was signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah on behalf of the Director-General of Public Affairs.
