Samuel Abu Jinapor, the Member of Parliament for Damongo, has publicly thrown his weight behind former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, describing him as the most suitable candidate to lead the party at a critical moment.
In a post on his Facebook page on Monday, Mr Abu Jinapor recounted his appearance earlier in the day on The Point of View, a current affairs programme hosted by Bernard Avle, where he discussed the leadership choices confronting the NPP and outlined his reasons for backing Dr Bawumia.
According to the Damongo lawmaker, Dr Bawumia’s years of service at the highest levels of government have equipped him with a deep and practical understanding of policy, governance and leadership. He said this experience had enabled the former vice president to navigate both periods of stability and times of national challenge with clarity and composure.
Mr Abu Jinapor also highlighted what he described as Dr Bawumia’s appeal beyond the party’s traditional support base. He noted that his calm disposition, clarity of thought and ability to engage a wide range of audiences enhanced his electoral appeal and positioned him to connect effectively with the broader Ghanaian electorate.
The MP further pointed to Dr Bawumia’s record in public office, arguing that his contributions across key areas of national development demonstrated competence and a solutions-oriented mindset. He said the former vice president had consistently shown an appreciation for innovation and reform as essential tools for modern governance.
Personal integrity and loyalty to the NPP were also cited as defining attributes. Mr Abu Jinapor said Dr Bawumia had remained steadfast in his commitment to the party’s values and ideals throughout his public life, while maintaining a forward-looking vision focused on advancing Ghana’s development and responding to emerging national priorities.
“As we approach January 31, it is important that our choices are guided by conviction, clarity and the long-term interests of the NPP,” the MP wrote, urging party members to reflect carefully before casting their ballots.
He concluded that, in his view, supporting Dr Bawumia was in the best interest of the party, calling on delegates to choose “experience, competence, loyalty and vision” as the NPP prepares to select its next flagbearer.
