Think tank Election Watch Ghana has issued its observational report on last Saturday’s presidential primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was retained by delegates as he won with a whopping 110,643 votes, representing 56.48 percent.
Votes of closest contender Kennedy Ohene Agyapong reduced while new entrant Dr Bryan Acheampong won some key regions.
In its report, Election Watch Ghana observed that Ken Agyapong’s campaign faced challenges as a result of “staged candidate” Dr Acheampong.
“Dr. Acheampong’s strong showing in southern Ghana, particularly in Ashanti, Eastern, Volta, and Greater Accra regions, was notable, destroying Kennedy Agyapong’s stronghold reducing is votes by almost 41%.”
It noted that the campaign messaging and strategy suggested a deliberate effort to counter Ken Agyapong’s narrative.
“The voting pattern indicates a possible strategic impact on Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign,” EWG further observed.
Over all, the group lauded NPP’s commitment to democracy, advising that “addressing these challenges strengthen the party’s processes”.
