The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has hinted that a bill will be laid on the floor of the House to change the name of Ghana’s foremost international airport from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.
He said the bill be laid by the Ministry of Transport as part of programmes and activities to be considered by the House on resumption.
Parliament returned from recess on Tuesday after more-than-a-month break.
Addressing the press just before meeting, Mr Ayariga outlined some of the bills to be considered before receding again in three months’ time.
Among these are a bill to merge the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and Energy Commission into the Ghana Energy Regulatory Commission, a Legal Profession Bill, getting a Defence University, and the KIA name change.
There have been heightened agitations recently for the scrapping of ‘Kotoka’ from the country’s foremost international airport.
The agitations have been spearheaded by Nkrumahist, who believe the name is an endorsement of the coup d’etat that saw the ousting of the Nkrumah-led administration in 1966.
