Ghana Maritime Authority refutes claims of ineffective vessel monitoring system

The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has dismissed claims that its vessel monitoring system is ineffective and that ships operating within Ghana’s waters go untracked.

In a press release dated September 22, 2026, the Authority responded to statements made by New Patriotic Party’s Communications Director aspirant Dennis Miracles Aboagye on TV3’s Daily Brief and on Joy FM’s Newsnite programmes on Tuesday, September 22, in which he alleged that the GMA’s vessel monitoring system was not working and that vessels sailing within the country’s waters were not being monitored.

The GMA described the claims as false and misleading, saying they do not reflect the operational reality of maritime surveillance in the country.

According to the Authority, its surveillance system for monitoring vessels within Ghana’s maritime jurisdiction remains fully operational.

The statement said the Authority continues to deploy its maritime domain awareness tools to provide round-the-clock surveillance and monitoring of vessels within Ghana’s maritime domain.

It added that the same system is used to monitor and protect offshore oil and gas facilities, pipelines, and submarine cables.

The GMA further explained that it applies standard operating procedures to track vessels, verify their identity and compliance, and support safety, security, and environmental protection within the country’s maritime space.

It maintained that the suggestion that vessels in Ghana’s waters are not being monitored is therefore untrue.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to continuous surveillance and the protection of Ghana’s maritime interests, and urged the public to disregard the claim and rely on official communications from the GMA.
