Former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament Sarah Adwoa Safo has formally announced her intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primary for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency.
In a statement dated Thursday, October 22, she said she would present herself for consideration as the party’s parliamentary candidate once the NPP announces the timetable and guidelines for the parliamentary primaries.
According to Ms Safo, the decision follows considerable reflection, extensive consultation and broad-based engagement with party leadership and executives, as well as her own conviction and loyalty to the principles and values of the party.
She disclosed that she had earlier indicated an intention to pursue opportunities beyond the constituency, but changed her position after deeper reflection.
“There is no greater honour or responsibility than serving and representing the interests and aspirations of the over two hundred thousand constituents of our beloved constituency in parliament,” she stated.
Ms Safo said her decision to return to the contest is informed by her enduring commitment to the people of Dome-Kwabenya and her belief that much remains to be done for the development of the constituency.
She described Dome-Kwabenya as one of the fastest-growing constituencies in Ghana, with significant opportunities and equally enormous developmental challenges.
She said that over her twelve years of service as Member of Parliament, she worked with residents, party faithful, community and religious leaders and other stakeholders to make meaningful progress and deliver tangible development.
Recounting the party’s electoral fortunes in the constituency, she said the votes inherited when she was elected as parliamentary candidate in 2012 were in the region of 35,000.
She said that through collective effort and unity of purpose, the NPP and then-presidential candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo secured 63,373 votes in the 2012 election.
According to her, the party’s tally rose marginally to 65,488 votes in 2016 and increased again to 75,041 votes in the 2020 election.
Ms Safo stressed that these achievements were not hers alone, but reflected the dedication, sacrifice and commitment of every party member, supporter and constituent who believed in the shared vision for Dome-Kwabenya.
“I firmly believe that the strength of our party lies in our unity, our shared values, and our collective willingness to work together in pursuit of our common purpose,” she said.
She expressed her aspiration to continue serving alongside the people to build a constituency where young people can realise their potential, families can thrive, and the concerns of ordinary residents receive due attention.
Ms Safo invited party members, stakeholders and constituents to engage with her in a spirit of openness, candour and mutual respect as they reflect on the future of Dome-Kwabenya and the leadership required to drive its next phase of growth and development.
“Dome-Kwabenya is home. It has always been home. My commitment to its people remains unwavering, and my resolve to serve remains steadfast,” she added.
