A member of the communication and legal teams of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, fears Ghanaians will be “dead” if the Akufo-Addo government is elected again.
Mr. Amaliba claims that the Akufo-Addo government is so insensitive to the plight of the people that he has allowed the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to carry on with its voter registration exercise amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
This he says puts the lives of the people in danger.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day, Mr. Amaliba told Johnnie Hughes that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government are self-seeking to have allowed the “useless” exercise to commence at the time of a pandemic.
“It’s about this useless register that we’re compiling. I’m of the view that the lives of the people are more important than our political survival but we have a president who thinks that his political survival is more important than the lives that we have so he as perilously risked the lives of Ghanaians to go out there and register and I think that it’s a shame to leadership of this country to allow this to happen at this time when in his own cabinet a number of them have been infected,” he said.
Asked why the NDC which deems the register “useless” and the compilation a “perilous” exercise, still partakes in it, Mr. Amaliba said it is necessary that they follow due process to get the Akufo-Addo government out of power.
He explains that another term for the Akufo-Addo-led government will not be a good thing for Ghanaians.
“Our forefathers fought for the independence of this country and so what we are telling the people now is to see themselves as fighting for the future. Just imagine, this is a government in its first year (sic) and it’s taking us through this, if you to give them another year, they will kill all of us,” he said.
He made reference to a viral video in which applicants in a queue at a registration centre were complaining about the disregard for social distancing, claiming that is evidence the pain Akufo-Addo has put Ghanaians through.
He believes those people in the queue, though uncomfortable about the situation, deem it a necessary process by which they can vote Akufo-Addo out of power.
